Grading for MasteryOne of our major shifts this year is grading for mastery. Students are expected to master each part of an assessment task before moving on to the next part. This practice is also being used by many teachers in day to day lessons by allowing for revisions. Providing opportunities for peer review and student feedback is an important part in the revision process. In making this shift, we are communicating to students that:
Tracking and Monitoring of ProgressIt is important that students also value the process and reflect on their learning along the way. The Tracking and Monitoring of Progress Through the NGSS Assessments document is one way to do this and also keep a record of where students are within the assessment. This document can also serve as the tool to communicate student progress with parents since many of the assessment tasks take days or weeks to complete without a grade being placed in the grade book. A final grade is given at the end of the assessment task that measures the degree of mastery of the NGSS performance expectation(s) found within the assessment tasks. Below is a student example of Part 1 completed on the Tracking and Monitoring of Progress document. |
